The
new ProComp
Infiniti
has the same clean, compact Thought Technology design that you have come
to expect from our products, but its really the improvements inside
that will grab your attention.
In
this new incarnation of the ProComp+,
Thought Technology has sought to meet two goals: The first is to answer
the requests from ProComp+
users for improvements on the old model, and the second is to add some new
capabilities.
The
first major feature in the fix it category is the recessed
fiber optic port. We have heard many stories about the hyperactive kid
who somehow launches a ProComp+
the length of the room. A surprising number of ProComp+ encoders
actually survive this abuse, but if the ProComp+
does meet its end when used as a football, it is often because the fiber
optic plug can get snapped off. The new ProComp∞
has dealt with this by recessing the protruding connector in the body of
the case. Additionally, the optical fiber now exits
from the side of the encoder rather than the front. This avoids both
damaging the cable and getting it tangled with the electrode leads. Next,
to keep it seated where you left it, new
rubber feet on the bottom of the device will stop the ProComp∞
from doing its own traveling.
The ProComp∞
DIP switches have been moved to the outside of the case from inside the battery
compartment. They are still recessed, so that they are not going to be
accidentally reset, but they are now substantial enough that one can
operate the rocker switches with the deft touch of a fingernail.
The
new tighter battery case will
not fall open like the one on the ProComp+.
Even if the case does come off, the batteries are now inside the unit, not
off in their own removable compartment, so an open battery case will no
longer stop operation. Additionally, the new internal hardware in the
ProComp∞ is better designed
to support rechargeable batteries. The ProComp+ was not really designed to handle
rechargeable batteries, but the ProComp∞
takes
into consideration their slightly smaller size, and can even recover from
a momentary loss in battery connection. It will also more accurately
report remaining battery life of rechargeable batteries, overcoming the
problem that the voltage drops precipitously near the end of charge as
opposed to declining gracefully.
Looking
towards the future, the ProComp∞
has added some new features such as USB support.
Anyone who has shopped for a portable computer lately knows that it can be
difficult to find one these days that still has a serial port on the back
for the Pro-SB interface. The new TT-USB will plug into your USB port and
connect to your fiber optic cable. Furthermore, Thought Technologys
upcoming BioGraph∞
software will be able to connect up to four encoders to individual TT-USB
interfaces, all on one computer.
Another
improvement is that impedance
checking is now built into the ProComp∞.
You still need to use the Thought Technology EEG-Z impedance checking
sensor, but now you can put the amp into impedance checking mode, and it
will stay there until you turn it back to regular mode. All this is done
with the power button, which you hold down for various time intervals. To
power on, the ProComp∞ takes a one-second hold on the power
button. Because this takes one full second, inadvertent bumps of the power
switch are not a problem. A three-second hold engages the impedance
checking function. A ten-second hold on the power button will actually
re-calibrate the amp to take the conditions at your location into
consideration. And for those of you who also use the peripheral
biofeedback modalities, it will interest you to know that the ProComp∞ can
now automatically identify what sensors are connected.
Then there is the compact flash card.
A slot in the back of the ProComp∞ accepts
an off-the-shelf model compact flash card. This feature greatly expands
your monitoring possibilities. Now you will be able to send clients into
their everyday environments and return with data on day or nighttime
activity. After recording the data, the CF card is simply plugged into
your PC, and the data is saved as a new session.
Finally,
the new ProComp∞ supports
a high sampling
rate
of 2048 samples per second on the first two inputs, and a rate of 256
samples per second on the remaining six inputs.*
The fast sampling allows you to monitor raw EMG, EKG and EEG
signals at full bandwidth.
