Attention Differences & Directions
and the neurobehavioral continuum

Resources & Links for people whose attention is different.  We see ADD as a non-pathological difference in most individuals, and as a gift for many. That doesn't mean it doesn't cause it's share of problems, especially for parents with kids who are ADHD.

This website will grow into a resource which provides   information and links on optimizing your and your family's life with ADD ADHD and the neurobehavioral continuum

  • DVDs, CDs VHS tapes, Cassettes on ADD / ADHD

  • Neurofeedback for ADD/ADHD:

  • Quotations on ADD and Attention
  • Understanding ADD article from Lynda and Mychael Thomson, of the ADD Centre
  • Thom Hartmann's Website I invited Thom Hartmann, one of my favorite people, and one of the true leaders in the field of ADD to send me a description of his new website. I’ve found Thom’s work to be not only inspiring, but also life perspective changing. I’ve recommended his books to countless people and have never heard from anyone anything other than the strongest appreciation for the suggestion. It’s no wonder that Thom has been invited, within the past 15 months, to meet the Pope and the Dalai Lama. He’s in the stratosphere when it comes to thinking, expressed in writing, which can make the world a better place.
Author, futurist, and psychotherapist Thom Hartmann has a new website for his books on ADD/ADHD and on Mysticism, Ecology, and Spirituality. While these topics may seem very different, all are grounded in Thom's worldview -
a perspective that both educational and planetary transformation begin with transforming our culture. And that, of course, begins with you and me healing and empowering ourselves and those around us. An interesting new
website with *many* excerpts from Thom's writings.

One of the best internet resources for ADD is Compuserve's ADD forum, founded by Thom Hartmann,  which is only accessible from Compuserve. It is worth signing up with compuserve, at least for one month, just to see the wealth of resources in the library and the people who frequent the forum

W9B4: Tuning Up for Success: Management of Treatment for Optimal Long Term Successful Outcome in Neurofeedback Judith O. Lubar
This workshop will be clinically oriented with live demonstrations on equipment and case history presentations which include records of EEG changes overtime and during each sessions.
Successful and long term successful treatment in neurofeedback with children and adolescents means covering the following bases:
1) Appropriate screening of patients so as to carefully assess other comorbidities (including learning disabilities, future possible bipolar disorder, drug use, etc.) so as to highlight those patients who need concurrent interventions and /or other interventions first or who are inappropriate for treatment. (Demonstration) and illustrative case studies.
2) Setting up appropriate expectations for the patient and their family.
3) Setting up the sessions for success i.e., micromanagement of the session (demonstration)
a) assessing patient's EEG learning style b) focusing patient on appropriate portion of the signal
c) assessing the natural length of the attentional response
d) reinforcing appropriate response
e) reframing failures
4) Recognizing the need for psychological intervention from the daily EEG with case study illustrations
5) Dealing with learning disabilities within the session - case study examples
6) Dealing with the family responses during different stages of EEG learning
7) Sharing progress with parents and school
8) Macromanagement of the family, school and peer system through therapy, group therapy, parent training and school interventions.
9) Dealing with termination issues with parents and child
W9F2 Nutritional approaches to Mental Health: Hyla Cass
As we already know from the field of EEG diagnosis and treatment, disorders of mood, memory, and behavior often reflect underlying physical or metabolic problems, undetected and under-diagnosed by mainstream physicians. With a complementary medical approach, however, these imbalances can be successfully diagnosed and treated, using nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and natural hormones. This can be successfully combined with neurofeedback techniques, and even medication when appropriate, for optimal results.
Moreover, the decline of health vitality, and mental function with age is not inevitable. Nutrients and hormones can be used for anti-aging, rejuvenation, and optimal performance. In addition to the use of smart drugs and nutrients, levels of hormones, including DHEA, pregnenolone, testosterone, and growth hormone, in both men and women, can be measured and then supplemented accordingly.
This talk will outline my clinical approach to diagnosing and treating such imbalances and deficiencies.
Common Presenting Problems
" anxiety " fatigue " depression " impaired memory and concentration
" insomnia " sexual dysfunction or decreased interest " weight gain

Possible Underlying Causes:
" hypoglycemia, diabetes
" anemia
" food and chemical sensitivities
" hormone imbalance/deficiency (e.g. thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, adrenal)
" chronic fatigue syndrome, including Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus,
candida, parasites)
" toxicity (heavy metals, chemicals, metabolic wastes)
" deficiencies (vitamins, minerals, amino acids)
" malabsorption/poor digestion

Diagnosis:
" history -- questionnaire
" laboratory studies

Treatment:
" Diet: add or remove certain foods
" Exercise: including walking (aerobic), toning exercises, yoga, or tai chi
" Stress reduction techniques: meditation, yoga, biofeedback
" Nutritional supplements:
" Vitamins, minerals, herbs, enzymes, other co-factors
" Amino acids, especially phosphatidylserine and acetyl-l-carnitine
" Hormones: thyroid, adrenal, DHEA, pregnenolone, progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, melatonin, human growth hormone

It will include suggestions as to when and when not it should be considered, a discussion of the difference of coherence training w/ lexicor and non-lexicor equiment, and will have a number of case studies and topographical presentations
WS2 Training to Achieve an Optimal (Ideal) Performance State Michael Thompson, Lynda Thompson, Frank or Mary Diets
An overview of the components of an ideal performance state will be presented. These components are grouped under the headings (1) physiological readiness, (2) mental readiness, (3) active work (mental and/or physical). For each of the 11 components listed under these three areas we wil1 describe the Why - objectives, the What - measurements and the How - interventions. The training procedures include biofeedback, neurofeedback, Samonas sound therapy, a Satori- relaxation technique and metacognition.
Objectives:
Each participant will learn to:
1. Define physiological & psychological (mental) readiness. These will be defined in terms of physiological parameters which can be measured and monitored to clarify the individuals state of relaxed, alert, calm, aware and reflective mental state. This sets the stage for:
2. Mental work. This will also be defined in terms of physiological parameters which can be measured and monitored. These measures clarify the individuals ability to maintain focus, concentration and use strategies in an appropriate and flexible manner.
3. Apply the appropriate monitoring techniques at times which will be most helpful to their client.
WS4 The case for lowered autonomic arousal Biofeedback training from the bottom up: The how and why of EMG, Thermal & GSR biofeedback     Carol Schneider
many clinicians who train with EEG biofeedback are still using EMG, TEMP and GSR training prior to EEG for certain psychophysiologic disorders, or even as a preliminary training for ADD and addictions. They feel it cuts the number of EEG training sessions for many reasons which will be outlined. Training from the top down is not the same as the effect of training from the bottom up. The rationale for these modalities, as well as simple training tips will be provided.
W9K4: Discussion of Protocols for Neurofeedback Treatments, Evaluation and Validation of New Protocols, and Demonstration of Assessment Techniques Employing Single and Multi-Channel EEG Methods Joel F. Lubar
There are many protocols that have been developed for neurofeedback treatments including those for attention deficit disorder with and without hyperactivity, learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, pain, head injury, and substance abuse. Some of these protocols have been tested, validated and have been published in peer review journals. Others are purely speculative and require considerable development but still look promising. In this workshop I will discuss how one should approach the development of new protocols, their testing and validation, and their administration. I will also demonstrate using single channel as well as multi-channel QEEG instrumentation, the assessment protocol for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and in particular, how to isolate and reinforce specific patterns of EEG activity that are associated with optimal performance of tasks associated with attentional problems such as reading, listening, and other academic activities. Data for a new protocol developed for training individuals at extreme frontal locations (FP1, FP2, and FPZ) will also be demonstrated.

W9N2 QEEG subtypes in ADD/ADHD, LD, OCD, Trauma, etc. Jay Gunkelman
The 11 QEEG subtypes identified in over 450 children with ADD/ADHD by Robert Chabot, Ph.D. will be discussed and analyzed for NF protocol implications. The theta, alpha and beta subtype groupings and their variations will be described. The main types will have a case reviewed.
Other cases seen in the workshop will include LD, the OCD subtypes, Trauma and others as time avails.
W9Q2 The B I G Picture: Weaving Peripheral BioFB, Energy Therapies, & Coaching with EEG Neurofeedback Lynda Kirk
Integrating peripheral biofeedback (EMG, TEMP, SCL, HR, etc.) with EEG neurofeedback can greatly benefit the client by shortening training time;
improving generalization of learned skills and states; and increasing internal locus of control. This holistic combination more quickly results in a healthy change in the client's mindbody "parking place".
In addition, the use of energy therapies (e.g. TFT - Thought Field Therapy) with EEG neurofeedback can quickly help the client resolve emotional and physical pain, stress, and/or trauma that may be slowing the training.
Effective coaching methods can greatly help the client improve skills and transfer the training to specific contexts in the "real world."
In this workshop, the "when, where, why, and how" of integrating peripheral biofeedback, energy therapies, and coaching will be outlined.

W9S4 Cutting Edge ADD Interventions: Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Metacognition & Sound Therapy; results obtained &Self-Assessing Knowledge and Skills Michael & Lynda Thompson
Part a) of this workshop will provide training in diagnosis and intervention for Attention Deficit Disorder in children and adults. The emphasis will be on combining neurofeedback, biofeedback, metacognition and Samonas Sound Therapy. (1/2 time)
Part b) of the workshop will present objective outcome measures (pre and post testing) and share results obtained with more than 150 clients. (1/8 time)
Part c) A means for tracking ones own skills and knowledge training in a log book and through a self-assessment examination will be taught and workshop participants, in small groups will try portions of the of the self assessment. The answers for each section will be discussed. (3/8 time)
Objectives:
Each participant will learn to
1. list and describe the symptoms of ADD/ADHD,
2. state the rationale for the use of neurofeedback with clients who have ADD symptoms and describe how it is carried out,
3. state the rationale for the use of various kinds of biofeedback with clients who have ADD symptoms,
4. a. define metacognition and apply in a clear stepwise fashion metacognitive strategies for students at any level for reading new material, listening to lectures, organizing a written or verbal presentation.
b. State how to enable students to understand immediate, short term, intermediate and long term memory and to apply techniques to maximize their ability to recall classroom and lecture material.
5. design interventions that combine neurofeedback, biofeedback, and instruction in metacognitive strategies
6. describe the anatomy of the ear, the structure of sound (harmonics and formants) and the theoretical basis for using Samonus Sound Therapy to achieve a relaxed, alert attentive state of mind; and
7. self-assess their knowledge in the above areas. - A log book provides a record of progress and helps identify gaps in experience while a self-assessment examination allows the practitioner to . helps to identify gaps knowledge. The examination used will have face-validity to the participant of being:
· Logical
· Sequential
· Basic to common professional practice
W9DD2 Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About ADD Testing & Treatment But Forgot to Ask Michael Linden
ADD is the most common psychiatric disorder in children and 10 million adults may be effected. This workshop will review the etiology and causes of ADD. ADD is a complex disorder, and has both many look-a-like causes (family situations, motivation) and co-morbid conditions (depression, anxiety, learning disabilities). More than one third of children & adults are misdiagnosed as either having or not having ADD. The diagnosis of ADD should be based on a thorough testing battery, particularly objective computerized Q-EEG, Continuous Performance Tests (CPT) and personality inventories (MMPI, Millon). These tests, together with clinical interviews and behavior rating scales will be presented. Accurate testing will help select which clients are good candidates for Neurofeedback and what obstacles may interfere with successful training. Testing results will also assist in designing the NF treatment protocol (Beta/SMR, Bi- Polar/Monopolar, Visual/Reading Tasks, etc.) and monitoring the training in order to decide when to make necessary changes. An organized four stage NF treatment plan strategy will be discussed. Other multi-modality treatments (medication, counseling, support groups, social skills classes) will be addressed. Plenty of time for discussion of case examples and questions will be provided.

ADD Success Strategies Thom Hartmann W7WP2   2 hr audio or video
Expanding on the information presented in the "What Maslow Overlooked"  talk, Thom Hartmann will present a detailed look at various strategies,  technologies, and methods to improve the chances for academic and life success for children and adults with ADD.  This workshop will emphasize life skills, meditation practice, and shifting paradigms (leaving the EEG aspects of ADD treatment to others).
When Abraham Maslow wrote Motivation and Personality back in 1954, he didn't have the advantage we do now of a reasonably thorough knowledge of  neurochemistry.   He observed people and the way they interacted with the world, and developed his theory of the "hierarchy of human needs, which ranged from the need for safety to the need for social interaction to the need for what some may call religious experience.
But Maslow had his own particular neurochemistry, which colored his   observations...and caused him to overlook a critical point.  This overlooked "basic human need" may, in fact, be so critical to an understanding of human nature that understanding it gives us a revelatory flash of insight into the
nature of personality disorders, and specifically attention deficit disorder (ADD).   This is what I call "The Need To Feel Alive," and it also explains why some people have multiple jobs, mates, and lifestyles, whereas others settle into one fixed routine and stay with it their entire lives, apparently quite happy in their stasis.
To understand how Maslow could have overlooked a fundamental human need which drives the behaviors of as much as 30% of our population, it's important to first understand how a part of the brain is wired.  This particular part of the brain, and the way it works, can cause this need to come into being, or to remain unexpressed in a person's life.
This presentation will explore how this aspect of neurochemistry can be so pivotal in the development of an individual, can contribute so powerfully to their success or failure as an adult and member of society, and how neuro- and bio-feedback may present very effective therapeutic interventions.

NLP Techniques for  the Practitioner Thom Hartmann   _W8JJ2   2 hr audio or video  NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming) is a technology of transformation. You will learn how to "read" another person, how to change your experience of time so scheduling and procrastination problems dissolve away, and how to communicate persuasively. You'll discover new ways to understand others, and gain new insights into how people change. Most important, you'll carry out of the room with you new techniques to help people with ADD change their lives in a positive way.
Bio: Thom Hartmann is a the former Executive Director of a residential treatment facility for disturbed children, a psychotherapist in private practice in Vermont, and the award-winning and best-selling author of six books on Attention Deficit Disorder. His book Healing ADD, also details the NLP approach to ADD, and is available from FUTUREHEALTH for $12.95 plus shipping.

W9M4 The Grand Unified Theory of Psychology: Submodalities in the Hologram  Thom Hartmann
A model that encompasses all fields of psychology and theology; understanding the holographic filing system of the mind shows us why and how specific therapies work or wound, and why and how the religious "conversion" experience is so often more therapeutic than many "psychological" techniques. Out of that understanding you will learn how to take any psych or theological technique and make it a more powerful tool for transformation and healing, or "functioning effectively socially or in business."
Thom Hartmann is a psychotherapist rostered with the state of Vermont

Thom Hartmann W017-2 Waking up to Personal and Global Transformation
In this passionate yet thoroughly researched presentation, author Thom Hartmann proposes that the only lasting solution to the crisis we face in to relearn the lessons of out ancient ancestors--who lived sustainably for thousands of generations. When you touch this new yet older way of seeing the world and hearing the voice of all life, you will discover that you, personally, hold the power of personal and planetary transformation.

Lynda & Michael Thompson: W012-4 Interventions for ADD to supplement NFB;
based on The ADD BOOK
The presenters will emphasize how to go beyond the single intervention of neurofeedback when helping clients with A.D.D.. The presentation will cover this topic in three steps. First, there will be a list of basic areas to discuss with clients to ensure that the client is in the best possible physical and mental condition to undergo treatment. Setting up for success includes paying attention to diet, sleep and exercise. Either provide counseling or refer out for therapy as needed. There will be mention of complicating medical conditions. Adjusting the home, school and work environments will be covered.
Second will come a discussion of complementary interventions. Possible additional improvement of the primary ADHD symptoms which you are treating with neurofeedback can be obtained with adjunctive techniques. Such procedures include EDR biofeedback, relaxation techniques (including EMG biofeedback, temperature biofeedback, breathing techniques, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, imagery), metacognitive strategies (for learning, remembering, and time management), and the use of full cap assessments to guide your interventions. Some clients may also benefit from the addition of sound and light entrainment techniques and / or Samonas Sound Therapy.
Finally, there will be instruction in recognizing and treating associated conditions which may accompany a clients primary difficulty. When treating A.D.D. these may include; depression, anxiety, tics, learning problems, behavior problems that are diagnosed as Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder, seizure disorders, and disorders along the autism continuum, including Aspergers Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorders.)

Joel Lubar W022-4 Assessment & Protocols for NF Interventions, emphasizing treatment of ADD/HD
This year we completed and published a multicenter study (Journal of Neuropsychology ) with more than 420 cases, ages 6-30 and have additional data on 200 more cases up to age 64. This database has been replicated and submitted for publication. It was developed for the single channel CZ and employs the measure of percent power theta/beta ratio for non-clinical controls, inattentive ADD and hyperactive-impulsive ADHD. I have also developed a database of approximately 120 cases of individuals with ADD/HD ages 7-18 employing 19 channels.
In this workshop I will demonstrate how to perform an assessment using the databases and how to analyse the results in order to develop the appropriate protocols for treatment. Protocols for treatment of learning disabilities, depression, Tourettes syndrome, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, epilepsy and other syndromes for which there is a clear research and clinical foundation will be covered.
The workshop will involve equipment based demonstrations employing both single and multichannel approaches and methods for detecting both gross and subtle artifacts which can distort the results.

The Complete ADD Testing & Treatment Workshop Mike Linden #A8PP2  2 hour audio or video This workshop reviews the symptoms and etiology of ADD. I will discuss in detail using testing (behavior rating scales, CPT tests & Q-EEG evaluations) to accurately diagnos ADD & develop individualized treatment plans. Selection of ADD candidates for NF training and monitoring the NF process to ensure the most success will be presented.

Everything you always wanted to know about NFB & ADD but forgot to ask: The nuts & bolts of  testing and treating ADD Clients  Michael Linden W7WH2: 2 hour audio or video  ADD is the most common psychiatric disorder in children, with approximately 10 percent of children effected and only 25 percent of these children outgrow the ADD symptoms.   ADD is a complex diagnosis since many other realted disorders cna be co-morbid.   The diagnosis of ADD should be based on a thorough testing and background history.   The assessment should include behavioral rating scales, IQ tests, achievement tests, CPT tests and an EEG brainwave evaluation to determine if the individual is a candidate for Neurotherapy training.  Accurate testing will help design the Neurotherapy treatment plan including which type of Neurofeedback (Beta, SMR, etc.) is most beneficial to begin with and what obstacles may interfere with successful training.   Other multi-modality treatments (medication, counseling, support groups) will be discussed.  Plenty of time for discussion of case examples and questions & answers will be provided.

W7WHH4 Tom Allen  Neurobehavioral disorder continuum: ADD and beyond; approach to NF

Referential vs. bipolar asessment , databases, pattern analysis, for NFB treatment of ADD/HD, learning disabilities, Tourette's Syndrome & Seizure disorders  Joel Lubar:  W7WL 4   I will demonstrate with instrumentation and LCD screen a simple and logical method for deciding whether to train referentially or bipolar for any established neurofeedback application. Next I will demonstrate how for ADD/HD to relate the results to our database of over 600 cases, and then how to fine tune the instrumentation to reward a pattern related to either normalization or optimal performance in a specific task such as reading or listening.

Patterns of EEG Changes In Patients With ADD/HD and Co-Morbidities Including Anxiety, Depression, Passive Aggressive Behavior, Chemical Dependancy, and Learning Disabilities. Judith Lubar WA8B4 4 hour audio or video Families with addiction and genetics associated with ADD/HD present a special challenge in neurofeedback and psychotherapy because of the cluster of comorbidities which seemed to increase in intensity from one generation to the next. These comorbidities have to be sorted out in the evaluation process and dealt with in both psychotherapy and neurotherapy treatment.
The workshop demonstrates how to recognize, based upon EEG criteria, when the patient needs psychotherapeutic intervention or intervention for learning disabilities in addition to neurofeedback training in order for the entire treatment program to be successful. Case histories and concomitant EEG feedback changes in reactivity in individuals who were depressed, anxious, passive aggressive and/or experiencing addictions illuminate the description of the appropriate EEG therapeutic changes which make the treatment outcome successful. EEG based termination criteria will also be described.

Choosing the Optimal EEG Patterns for the Enhancement of Attention & Peak Academic Performance: Assessment, Treatment Protocols, & Demonstrations. Joel F. Lubar   WA8S4 4 hour audio or video During the past twenty years we have developed protocols for the treatment of attention deficit\Hyperactivity disorder. These protocols involved basically increasing beta activity and decreasing theta activity over central cerebral cortex for the innattentive component of ADD\HD. In individuals that have the hyperactive form of attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder the SMR protocol is used initially. This involves training patients first to increase SMR (12 to 15 Hz over sensorimotor cortex) and then the using the beta paradigm to increase cognitive processing. In this workshop I will demonstrate specifically how an assessment is made in order to determine whether an individual has an EEG pattern consistent with the diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and also whether to train referentially or bipolar and and which frequencies to reward and which frequencies to inhibit.
We have published research that showing that it is possible to enhance attentive processes in non-ADD/HD individuals. This often involves working with other portions of the beta band and inhibiting partions of the theta-alpha(thalpha) region. I will demonstrate how to assess where to set the parameters for training in order to enhance reading and listening performance for specific locations associated with Broca's and Wernicke's areas. Next I will demonstrate how this methodology can lead to procedures for enhancing other types of activities often designated as "peak performance" including certain types of athletic activities where visualization is important before a specific movement is performed. These more complex protocols involve being able to identify rather specific EEG patterns and reinforcing these patterns. The way in which this is done will be demonstrated specifically using EEG BF instrumentation.
Effective Interventions For ADD Lynda & Michael Thompson WA8U4
Description: In the past we used short term interventions including medications and behaviour modification to help both our child and adult clients with ADD. Today we are able to offer more lasting solutions. The ADD Centre program has as its foundation, neurofeedback. But neurofeedback training, though necessary for a lasting change, is not necessarily sufficient to effect maximum improvement. In addition the ADD Centre program offers a balanced diet of metacog- nitive strategies for learning, biofeedback to decrease tension and increase alertness, advice on a healthy diet and supplements and a potpourri of simple to use techniques to help families with organization, communication, and a positive approach to each others idiosyn- crasies (behaviour problems). Occasionally there is certainly a role for the short term use of medication. This multimodal approach forms the basis for a new public- ation, The ADD Book, New Understandings, New Approaches from Little Brown, N.Y. by Dr. William Sears and Dr. Lynda Thompson.
In this workshop we will describe these interventions and how they are combined for different presentations of ADD. This workshop will outline: (1) a feedback program using EEG, EDR and peripheral temperature for ADD clients; (2) teach learning strategies to improve reading, listening, organizing and remembering and, (3) show how neurofeed- back and metacognitive strategies are combined in the ADD Centres program, (4) provide an opportunity for discussing strategies for helping parents reorganize household time and job management in a manner that models both an efficient and a positive approach to accomplishing tasks, (5) discuss strategies for increasing the ADD childs self esteem through study-time techniques which reinforce the strategies being taught with neurofeedback in the centre.

W7WQ 2 Carla Nelson: HYPERACTIVE HEARTS & MINDS:  Towards a Unified View of ADD?
Scores of experts have studied attention deficiencies and filled in parts of the ADD puzzle. But we still lack a box top, a picture that shows how the pieces can fit all together. Many are asking if it is even possible for the wide range of symptoms and traits we call "ADD" to rest side-by-side in any one DSM category. But where some are calling for more splitting apart, Carla Nelson is calling for more coming together. Blending findings from clinical practice with leading edge research from learning theory to psychobiology, she shows how the ADD puzzle becomes a unified whole if we look at arousal and attention together. This workshop details a matrix of nine attentional states that shift in response to stimuli, a dyanamic model of ADD that moves along a continuum from underaroused hypofocusing to hyperaroused hyperfocusing, leaving a trail of pointers to common comorbidities. With a vivid functional portrait that makes good sense to both layfolk and specialists, she provides a powerful platform that practioners can employ to explain their treatment protocols to patients and peers.
Carla Berg Nelson, a Bay Area journalist who reports on new developments in science and tech and holds a degree in psych from Berkeley, is leader of the Mind-Brain/Body Sciences Forum (GO MIND) on CompuServe and co-leader of  GO ADD where she has been a lay counselor to thousands of ADD families and conducted live interviews with most of the best known specialists in the field.

W7WR4 Vincent Monastra An Integrative Approach for Assessing and Treating ADHD
Genetic, neuroanatomical and QEEG research findings support a model of ADHD as a "non-adaptive" neurodevelopmental "disorder" characterized by behavioral, neuro-psychological and neurological traits. "Mainstream" approaches to assessment have relied on historical, observational and neuro-psychological test findings for diagnostic purposes due to the absence of a "laboratory" test for the underlying neurological disorder. However, due to the high degree of co-morbidity between ADHD and psychiatric disorders (e.g. affective and conduct disorders), the error rates for behavioral and neuro-psychological tests have been unacceptably high, when diagnosis is attempted on the basis of these tests alone.
In order to improve diagnostic accuracy, a team of researchers led by Dr. Monastra and Joel Lubar, Ph.D. examined the use of QEEG assessment procedures in the diagnosis of ADHD. their findings indicated the ability of QEEG procedures to identify patients with ADHD with a high degree of accuracy and enhance the accuracy level of behavioral and neuro-psychological (CPTs) measures.
This workshop will proceed from a detailed examination of the Monastra, Lubar, Linden, Green et al QEEG Validation Study and present an integrative assessment strategy that is consistent with the current neuro-developmental model of ADHD. In addition, based on a perspective of ADHD as a neuro-developmental disorder that is observed in the form of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity at home and school, this workshop will present specific neurotherapeutic, cognitive and behavioral interventions that constitute an Integrative Therapeutic Approach for ADHD.

W7WS 4 Lynda Thompson (co-author The ADD Book), Michael Thompson   Cognitive Strategies:  What they are and how to integrate them into Neurofeedback Training with ADD students.
For ADD  Child and Adult Clients,  Neurofeeedback Training is necessary but not sufficient to effect maximum improvement.    This workshop will   describe: (1) a feedback program using EEG, EDR and peripheral temperature for ADD clients;  (2) teach learning strategies to improve reading, listening, organizing and remembering and,  (3) show how neurofeedback and metacognitive strategies are combined in the ADD Centre's program.More Detailed Description of Workshop:Title:    Metacognition Combined with Neurofeedback: an Effective Educational Approach to ADD For Child ClientsFor Adult ClientsTarget Audience:Participants may be at any stage of experience:  however, the objectives are worded to apply to participants who   have had some experience with the use of neurofeedback with children and  / or adults who have ADD or ADHD.Terminal Objective:       To enable the participants to be able to apply the combined approach of Metacognitive strategies and Neurofeedback to ameliorate the symptoms (short attention span, distractibility, impulsive approach to work) of ADD and the associated academic difficulties, including underacheivement due to a disorganized approach to work.Enabling Objectives:Neurofeedback: At the completion of the seminar the participants should be able:to distinguish sub-groups of ADD children and apply the correct use of SMR vs beta training to each group.impulsive (may be either under or over aroused)non-impulsiveto select appropriate electrode placement which may vary with arousal, impulsivity and presence or absence of language difficulties.to recognize and distinguish two groups of children with ADD according to their level of alertness and apply the appropriate EDR feedback to each group. under-arousedover-arousedTo recognize three groups of  ADD Adults and apply appropriate training strategies for each group.Metacognitive Strategies:At the completion of the seminar the participants should be able:to define metacognitionto apply a 7 step metacognitive strategy for junior high, high school and college studentsto reading new materialto listening to lecturesto organizing a written or verbal presentationto apply cognitive strategies to elementary school math and readingto improve a client's setting of goals and management of time (high school and adult clients) Metacognition combined with Neurofeedback: At the completion of the seminar the participants should be able:to develop a training protocol for an ADD client that combines appropriate neurofeedback, EDR and peripheral temperature feedback,  and training in metacognitive strategies. Description of Seminar:A didactic lecture covering   sub-types of ADD and appropriate Neurofeedback approaches to each will be given.   At this juncture metacognition will be introduced and the seminar will become` more interactive with the participants being challenged with a brief reading assignment that is given to students at the ADD Centres who are in grade 7 and above.  This will be followed by a quick lecture preparation assignment. When the participants have completed their tasks there will be a discussion of the techniques they used to approach the tasks and that will be compared with the approach of children and even college level students with ADD.  The leaders will present a 7 step strategic approach to reading, preparing for exams or presentations, and listening to boring lecture materials.  The participants will then be invited to spend a few minutes reading a passage using the metacognitive approaches just discussed and discussing the differences they experienced when using these techniques.  They will repeat this procedure revamping the lead previously worked on.  Organizing thinking processes and strategies and understanding different levels of memory and the use of various visual and auditory/verbal memory techniques will be emphasized.  Throughout the presentaton the rationale for combining neurofeedback with training and learning skills will be underscored.    This combination effectively improves performance and leads to high levels of customer satisfaction.  Clients have immediate benefits from applying   metacognitive strategies and long term benefits  from the combination of strategies and neurofeedback. WHH4 Tom Allen  Beyond ADHD: Neurotherapy for Neurobehavioral Disorders    The focus of this workshop will be the application of EEG neurofeedback and traditional biofeedback methods for the treatment of neurobehavioral disorders in children and adults. We will address the concept of a continuum of neurobehavioral disorders and the types of problems that appear to respond to neuro and biofeedback treatment technigues. The technigues and methods are based on clinical data derived from neurofeedback practice with this population. There will be live demonstrations of technigue and reviews of patient data. A copy of Mr. Allen's protocols with various neurobehaviorally disordered populations will be made available to the attendees of the workshop.
The workshop will address Tourettes, Asperger's Syndrome, Hyperlexia & Higher Function Autism in detail with some review of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In addition there will be a discussion on typing ADHD based on psychophysiological variables and the implications of these typologies regarding therapeutic intervention . Tom is an experienced clinician who  has trained hundred of other clinicians in neurofeedback techniques.
